Clubhouse Building Project

What is a Clubhouse?

The Computer Clubhouse provides a creative and safe after-school learning environment where young people from under-served communities work with adult mentors to explore their own ideas, develop skills, and build confidence in themselves through the use of technology.

Clubhouse 274 is an after-school drop in centre where members choose to come and work on projects that interest them. As well as having access to state of the art technology and programmes, the Clubhouse also uses volunteers as mentors to provide help and support. Members have access to a world wide community of Clubhouse Members and staff to share and publish their work in a secure and supportive online village. They also have the opportunity to apply for scholarships and participate in a biennial Teen Summit with members from the world wide clubhouse community in Boston, USA.

Established in 1993 by The Computer Museum (now part of the Museum of Science, Boston) in collaboration with the MIT Media Laboratory, the Computer Clubhouse helps youth acquire the tools necessary for personal and professional success.

NextSpace and the Intel World Mural Project

Clubhouse Projects

On the first week of the July school holidays, Clubhouse 274 held another holiday workshop for the Teen Summit Team.
Our morning started at 10am and finished at 4pm. During this time we were assigned groups and were asked the question "What will technology be like in 40 years time?"
From this question the groups brain-stormed different ideas of technology and how they will be improved, or they just came up with their own invention that they were fascinated with.
The 3 groups came up with 3 different products and designed them in 3D, and then animated them using the Deep Explorer software from Right Hemisphere. We then created a presentation for each product, and a poster which would be part of the Intel World Mural project. A special project celebrating Intel’s 40th birthday.

After 3 days of hard work at NextSpace, we presented ou inventions to the staff of

Next Space

and Right Hemisphere. Our presentations included videos of the inventions, the 3D models and the benefits and negatives of the technology.

The Clubhouse would like to thank Brenda and

Next Space

for all their hard work. We had a great time and learnt a lot.

Clubhouse Paper Plane Challenge

Clubhouse ProjectsFriday saw the first Clubhouse 274 Paper Plane Challenge. Members had to make a paper plane to compete in 3 different challenges. They had to fly a dart through a small hole from 4 meters, try and fly straight down a 6 meter channel without going outside the guidelines and a pure distance challenge. Points were tallied up from all 3 challenges to find the winner.

All the darts were made with scrap paper and the members were only able to make 2 darts each. They had the opportunity to test and modify their designs throughout the competition. The designs were all very different but there was only a few points difference between the first 3 places.

Clubhouse Members become Captains

General NewsA huge thanks to Peter and the team from Flight Experience, Takapuna, who gave 4 clubhouse members a chance to have a go in their state-of-the-art Boeing 737 simulator. The Clubhouse members who are all part of a games development team got to take off and lan in Auckland after a brief fly around the city, including a Sky Tower flyby. Peter also showed them how aircraft fly as well as guiding them through their flight. The members came away buzzing and it was a great experience for all of them.

So, if you're looking for something different and have always wanted to try out flying, we recommend you see Peter at Flight Experience, Takapuna. 09 4868193.

Music Artists Workshop

Clubhouse ProjectsThe first Clubhouse 274 Music Artists Workshop was held over the first week of the September school holidays and  was a huge success. With help from Clubhouse staff and  working musicians, 6 members wrote, created, recorded and produced their own song for a compilation CD. Each member chose a theme relating to themselves, the future, Clubhouse or where they are from.

Francis Tupe from the band 20/20 said "there is awesome talent here" after helping with the guitar work on one song, and NZ Idol contestant and choir leader Faaoso 'Oz' Aneru thought there were a number of potential hits in the making. Both thought that the members had done an outstanding job.

The group had to start out creating their lyrics or music and while some had used the music creation software before, others were making songs for the very first time. Not only did they have to learn about music composition, but they help with each others recording, mixing and mastering. Dont be too suprised if you see the Clubhouse logo on an album in your music shop soon.

Clubhouse +Plus

General NewsClubhouse 274 has just had its biggest change to date with the expansion into another room. This has doubled our space and allowed us to add more computers, set up a dedicated music suite and have more room for hands on activities.

With a lot of help from our contributing schools, Clover Park Middle School and Te Whanau o Tupuranga, Arrow International, Atomik Design and a number of other individuals, we have been able work through this project quickly and the clubhouse members have been involved right throughout the process.

In fact, using 3D modeling tools, clubhouse members were able to design the expanded clubhouse and create different layouts and colour schemes. It was based on these designs that we settled on our final layout. Members also got involved in painting murals, walls and our new green screen.

This expansion has had real benefits already allowing us to have multiple teams working in the clubhouse on different things, like our new Robotics group without having to cram them into tiny spaces.

Video Artists Workshop

General NewsOur first holiday programme, the Video Artists Workshop has just finished and was a great success. We had to video team each choosing different videos to create, and they only had a week to do it in.
One group created a music video for a recent pop song while the other has made a 30 second ad for the Fair Go TV ad awards.
As well as planning, storyboarding, filming and editing their videos, the members also had a series of smaller workshops looking at a range of things such as cinematography, editing, camera use, audio, pre-vis and post production.
They also had to create their own DVD covers and inserts.

All the members who attended said they had a great time and learnt a lot. They are keen to keep making videos and teach their new skills to other members.

Clubhouse 274 would like to thank
